A payline is a specific path through the grid. A win is registered when matching symbols land along one of those paths, usually starting from the leftmost reel. Games state how many paylines they run, and on many modern titles the count is fixed rather than selectable, which means the displayed stake is the cost of covering all of them.

Check whether lines are fixed or selectable before setting a stake, and read the stake as a per-spin cost.
