A fraction of each wager is diverted into the jackpot pool rather than into the game’s ordinary returns. Pools may be local to one operator or networked across many, and a networked pool grows faster because far more players feed it. The advertised figure is the current pool, not a payout anyone is owed.

A worked example

If 1% of every stake feeds the pool, then a game advertising 96% RTP may be returning 95% through ordinary play and 1% through a jackpot almost nobody wins. For the overwhelming majority of players the effective return is the lower figure, because the jackpot component only materialises for the single player who triggers it.
